tHE TOUR IN OUDENAARDE

For racing fans, it was a disappointing cycling spring, to say the least.

Their patience, however, will not be tried for much longer. If all goes well, and subject to the Covid-19 measures prevailing at the time, the professional peloton will finally ride Flanders’ Most Beautiful, the Tour of Flanders (De Ronde van Vlaanderen), on Sunday 4 April 2021!

So it appears that even the coronavirus cannot stop the race. This year, the Tour of Flanders will again be held, albeit at a later date and with additional measures in place.

NO SPECTATORS

In 2021, the Tour will sadly not be the familiar celebration of previous years. This time - as in 2020, all attention will be focused on the competition itself. No additional events or fringe activities will be organised. Fortunately, this tour is, of course, more than worthwhile in its own right! In consultation with organiser Flanders Classics and the safety committee, we decided against allowing any spectators at the finishing straight in Oudenaarde or on the climbs.
We also absolutely advise against spectators lining the course for the reason that the health and safety of supporters, officials and riders takes absolute priority.

So this year, we ask you - again- to stay at home and follow the race in your bubble. If you happen to live along the course, you can certainly come out and cheer the riders on, but with a face covering and socially-distanced.

Slightly modified course

The short sequence of races on the newly proposed calendar requires a great deal of organisation on the part of the teams. To give teams and riders the opportunity to build up sufficient downtime between races that follow each other in rapid succession in October, Flanders Classics has, in consultation with various teams, decided to slightly cut back on the race distance.
For the Tour of Flanders, this translates into a slight reduction, with a total race distance of 241 km for the Elite Men and 135 km for the Elite Women.

The final remains unchanged, with the duo Oude Kwaremont and Paterberg once again taking centre stage. The elimination of race kilometres will take place after the first climb of the Oude Kwaremont. Due to the change, Tenbosse and the Muur van Geraardsbergen will not feature this year; the Valkenberg will be included in the course instead. After the last climb of the Paterberg, the riders will face a 13K homestretch to the finishing line in 'our' Oudenaarde.
